Your Responsibilities When Renting a Portable Toilet

Portable toilets provide a convenient way of meeting employee or event attendee’s needs when permanent facilities aren’t available. Before renting a unit, however, it’s important to understand what will be expected of you. While certain services are provided by the renter, others are the customer’s responsibility. With C & H Disposal Service, Inc., learn more about what you’ll need to do to ensure a successful portable toilet rental.

Secure a Permit

Before ever renting a portable toilet, it is your responsibility as a renter to learn about local permitting requirements. A toilet placed on your private property does not require a permit. If you plan to place the toilet in a public space, however, you may need to secure a permit from your local authority. Public spaces include parks, streets, sidewalks, and edge spaces between buildings and the road. You may also need a permit when renting toilets for a public event.

If your toilet placement does require a permit, it is also your responsibility to secure one. This includes completing an application and other necessary paperwork.

Provide Sufficient Toilets

Secondly, you must make sure to rent enough toilets for everybody who may be using them. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that employers provide adequate sanitation facilities and gives a breakdown of the minimum number of portable toilets at a job site:

  • 1-15 people: one toilet
  • 16-35 people: two toilets
  • 36-55 people: three toilets
  • 56-80 people: four toilets
  • 81-110 people: five toilets
  • 111-150 people: six toilets
  • Add one toilet for each additional 40 people over 150

Though special events aren’t subject to OSHA regulations, this guideline may still be useful. You should also consider increasing the quantity if you plan on serving food and drinks. These will increase demand, and a few extra toilets will help prevent long lines.

Place Toilets Appropriately

Once you have secured permits and determined the number of toilets you wish to rent, you will need to choose their location. An appropriate placement should be flat, level ground that is not in the way of foot or vehicle traffic. You should also make sure there is enough space for all the toilets you rent.

Additionally, the toilet placement should be near your job site or event for convenience. Whether you are running a construction project or a wedding, people should have easy access to restrooms.

Inspection

Once the toilets have arrived at your site, inspect them carefully. Check for any problems, malfunctions, or signs of damage. If you find any issues, inform the rental company immediately. This allows the rental company to repair the issue or provide a replacement, ensuring that all your rentals are fully functional.

Failure to inspect the toilets may also cost you. If there is pre-existing damage that the rental company is not aware of, it may be discovered on retrieval. In this case, there’s no way to prove that the damage did not occur while the toilet was in your possession. You’ll be held responsible for the damage, and you may have to pay extra to repair it.

Keep Toilets Sanitary

While renting portable toilets, make sure they stay sanitary. This is important for health and also ensures a pleasant experience when using a restroom. Some rental companies provide regular cleaning for long-term rentals, but it’s up to you to schedule service as frequently as necessary. You may also want to keep sanitation supplies on hand, such as:

  • Toilet paper
  • Feminine products
  • Hand soap
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Paper towels

Spare supplies will keep you prepared in case of an accident, and you’ll be able to refill dispensers as necessary to avoid running out.

Pay for Damages

Once the rental period has ended, the rental company will retrieve the toilets. The team will then inspect the toilets before cleaning and preparing them for the next customer. If a toilet has been stolen, damaged, or vandalized while in your possession, you are responsible for paying for repairs. You may even have to cover a replacement if the damage cannot be fixed. The rental company will make all final decisions on whether damage or graffiti is repairable.
